posted by pjmorley, Feb 20, 2008 9:43 PM — 10 comments

This table is for a 35mm or full frame sensor DSLR.

To learn how to use it and to download tables that suit your DSLR's crop factor, see the full tutorial on my website blog.

Thanks for the information. It should prove helpful.

I think that the link above would better serve readers if it took them directly to the tutorial that you reference, like the one below:

Or if anyone has a TI-86 or similar Texas Instruments Calculator

Where 0.02 = CoC

CICLD
Input "Focal Length ",F
Input "f-stop ",N
Input "Subject Distance ",S
H=((F*F)/(N*0.02))+F
DN=((S*304.8)*(H-F))/(H+(S*304.8)-(F*2)
DF=((S*304.8)*(H-F)/(H-(S*304.8))
CICLD
Disp "Hyperfocal= ",(H*0.00328)
Disp "Near Limit= ",(DN*0.00328)
Disp "Far Limit= ",(DF*0.00328)

I made this about a year ago and just take my TI-86 in my camera bag with a list of f-stops to the nearest 1/1000th in the cover. If anyone knows how to make it better let me know, but for now here ya go!

Oh and 304.8 is a unit conversion so the results will be displayed in feet if you want the results in meters just change 304.8 to 1000

CoC - Circle of Confusion

Four-Thirds = 0.015
APS-C = 0.018
35mm = 0.029

or go here to find your individual camera's CoC

A subject a many people shy away from which is a pity. Maybe it's the horrendous maths involved? Here's the hyperfocal distance calculator I've used in the past. It calculates everything for you providing you know the crop factor of whatever digital camera you use. Look up your CF here:

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Lenses/Fi- eld-of-View-Crop-Factor.aspx

The hyperfocal distance calculator is here:

I'll leave the Texas Instrument method to the purists. :0)

Good tutorial!

Your photo of the Little girl by window is truly inspiring. I would like to use this picture for a website specializing in publishing quality e-books for parents and children up to 11 years of age.

Hi, I'm setting up a new website for linking up families/carers of people with disabilities and want to use your photo: Family tickling each other on one of the pages (It would be the photo that accompanies the "Families Journeys" page. Would you permit that?
Many thanks!

Thanks for the kind words guys, still means a lot that a tutorial I did so long ago is still relevant and appreciated.
