Wildcard Searches

posted by ngould, Dec 26, 2005 7:00 AM — 12 comments

I am not sure when this feature came on board but it is really useful.

It appears to work for photo searches but not user, camera or other types of searching.

For those that don't know what a wild card search is: you enter into the search box the first part of your search word followed by * (asterisk - shift 8). Do not have space before the *.

SXC will then display the first 1000 photos (updated March 06) that have keywords beginning with the letters before the *.

For example, entering 'lea*' will show 1000 photos that have the keywords 'leaf', 'leaves', 'leap', 'lean' or anything else beginning with 'lea...'.

Changing the display criteria (eg. to 'downloads, descending') will show a different first 1000 images. Unless of course there are less than 1000 images, in which case you see all images displayed in the new way.

I've used the new SXC keyword feature to allow groups of my photos to be easily viewed (if anyone wants to bother!). The wildcard feature now makes this even easier.

For example, type in 'ngsk*' to see all my sky-related photos.

The wildcards can also be used in advanced search in the different boxes to do even more powerful searches.

Thanks for another great feature Peter!

You need 50 photos to be counted in any section.

Hi, I'm setting up a new website for linking up families/carers of people with disabilities and want to use your photo: Family tickling each other on one of the pages (It would be the photo that accompanies the "Families Journeys" page. Would you permit that?
