Stunning Textures
posted by ugaldew, May 24, 2006 5:47 AM — 69 commentsHI SXCers and guests , In this visual- tutorial we will learn the easy technique of getting stunning textures in your images , the process is a variation of my previous Professional Retouching tutorial and even when the process is very very easy ( 4 minute edition) the results can turn an ordinary pic into a forget me not scene , for this tutorial you will need Photoshop and do not worry if you are a PS newbie it is quite easy .. so lets get started !
This is the effect we want to get in this practice

Original

Download this practice's PSD file (0.7MB)

I will use Fall2 by Gorkola at SXC
_______________________________________________________
>> Step 1
Open and Duplicate Layer
Open Fall 2 image and duplicate the background layer ( layer/duplicate layer ) or left click in background layer and duplicate

_______________________________________________________
>> Step 2
Apply Gaussian Blur
Select the duplicated layer (background copy ) and add “Gaussian Blur” (filter / blur / Gaussian blur )

It hast to look rather blurry similar to the example , but don’t worry too much about this step you can add more blur at any moment of the process

_______________________________________________________
>> Step 3
Reduce Layer's Opacity
Set the layer’s opacity value to 50%. (layers / layer style / blending options ) slide to 50% the opacity slider in the top of the layer palette.
The opacity can go from 30% to 60% it will determine how soft the pic will be

_______________________________________________________
>> Step 4
Add Mask sharpen items
So far we have achieved to get the softness and most part of the process is done , but there may be some items that look rather blurry and a bit of sharpening will make it look more real . For this (fall 2) image I will mask some branches and the bench
Add a mask in the layer we have been working into (Background Copy)

Set the soft brush tool with at least 50 % of opacity and black color and then brush the details you want to sharpen (bench , leaves, branches etc)

And we are done !!! So far the picture has to look like this

In contrast with the original

Original

So that was all !!!
_______________________________________________________
>> EXTRA Step
Add a hue/saturation adjustment layer
I want to add some funky tones to the scene , so I’m going to add a hue/saturation adjustment layer. So lets go to the layers palette and click the (adjustment layer button) the black and white circle at the bottom and then click hue/saturation in the pop up menu

Then play a bit with the hue and we are done !!

This is are the tones I liked

I hope you have found this tutorial useful , and that you have enjoyed as much as I did writing it , please feel free to ask anything or write an email to ugaldew@yahoo.com if you have more doubts or comments about this tutorial

Here are some examples

For this example I added some more adjustments layers

good stuff =)
..i do something similar to this, but i use:
1. duplicate layer
2. screen top layer
3. gaussin blur top layer to desired effect (i think i usually use a setting of 2-4... can't remember right now)
note: this way tends to add an exposure change to the picture
29. posted by beetlewing, Oct 22, 2006 4:23 AM
forgot to mention in my comment that you can also control the effect by adjusting the transparency of the screened layer (top)
=)
