50mm for Nightshots
posted by ytchew, Sep 30, 2006 6:52 PM — 2 commentsThe Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens is a fantastic piece of tool. I used it for some casual night photography around a church compound and the colors rendered are just brilliant. No flash was used.
But because of the low shutter speed (as low as 2!) I found that I needed a tripod. Which I did not have on hand at that time. Thus most of the shots came out a little blurry when viewed in their full size. For blogging purposes, they look fine.
You can view some of the pics here.

1. posted by dlritter, Oct 1, 2006 12:34 PMMany people forget how good 50 mm prime lenses can be. I guess people are used to the slightly soft results they get from most standard zoom lenses. Every time I put my 50 mm f1.4 lens on my DSLR I am amazed at the brightness of the image in the viewfinder. It's a wonderful thing to behold :)

Have to agree Nikon's 50mm f1.8 is a fantastic lens, especialy for the price.
EVERY NIKON DSLR OWNER SHOULD HAVE ONE :)
There pretty sharp, give lovely natural colours, and as a bonus on a DSLR have a decent focal length for portraints.
I leave mine on my D200 as much as I can.
Here's a example - (completly unedited in photoshop)

(not the best photo, but shows what the lens is like).
