1. posted by crisderaud, Jun 11, 2007 6:44 PMEverybody wants what you describe but there isn't one yet (although they are getting closer) I use a Panasonic FZ50. It is an advanced feature point & shoot. I like it. You can squeeze some good shots out of it.
For a SLR-like camera with a fixed lens the Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd is a good choice at $340. (Consumer Reports July 2007) It will do mostly what you have in mind.
Once you have chosen a possible candidate for purchase, check out what people think about their experience with the camera at:

Good luck hunting. Remember that the choices on the market are continually evolving in as short a time as a month. ~Cris

Thanks, Cris.
I just needed some starting point.
Unfortunately, none of my Polish friends recommends Panasonic... Maybe they are wrong... I'll wait a little. A lot of reading before me. ;)
Best regards!

Why not browse through some photography magazines. You may find there are some useful articles.
When choosing my camera I found some in-depth articles comparing a number of different makes, and in different price brackets. Once you have narrowed down your choices nothing beats going into shops and getting your hands on the cameras to see how they feel.
All the best!

If you are going all in and getting the 400D I am jealous. That's my "dream pick". The Canon is better for me because we have a dedicated Canon outlet store within a bus ride of here.
Maybe I should follow Erika's advice and just go buy it, I don't have a car to sell so I'd have to dip into the nest egg, I'm real interested how well the camera will work for you. Your opinion may influence my decision. ~Cris

I really love my 400D, probably my best investment in a while... now I need to get some good lenses. I have the kit lens and a canon 75-300mm IS lens.
I bought mine from bhphotovideo.com.
