The crinkly texture of the starfish shows the light well . The contrasting colors of the starfish and the sand. The focus is on the object (starfish) The starfish is like an isolated object in a natural background. It could be easily incorporated into a composite image. The shot reminds people of the beach in a pleasant way. That's what I see.

I agree with Cris. There is fabulous colour & clarity to the starfish. It really stands out, and is framed beautifully in the shot.

I too am amazed at what gets downloaded & what doesn't. I am close to my very first 1K - It's certainly not my best pic though in my opinion:

I love the pic because of the movement of the water. It gives life to something that would otherwise have been a pretty but static picture. Well done and thanks very much for sharing.

There is something about shells and starfishes lying on the sand that evoke a happy feeling. But that doesn't necessarily apply to all pictures of the same subject. I tried to see the other pictures and some are looking a bit cluttered and not too cute. Yours is one of those that work.

The colors and lighting work well. But what I really like about it is the movement of the water. It gives it a sense of movement as shar pointed out.

If for example I was designing a brochure about beauty and wellness or the likes, I would probably use it, especially with the idea that there are no restrictions.

When I took the shot, I was trying to catch some of the motion of the water (almost lost the starfish in one wave), but I was afraid by the reviewer's initial rejection (LOL) that it was too much blur.

That brings up another point... I'll have to try tweaking and re-submitting more often when I generally like a shot - this one was rejected first time because it was "too blurry" - I sharpenned it a little - not much at all, and resubmitted it... and look how it has downloaded.

Still having fun doing this... just have to convince my wife to spend $ we don't have on even better hardware! :)

And of course beach pics are always popular.

Asymmetric design is far more dynamic and interesting than simply putting the subject dead center.

Personally I think putting the subject in the center of your shot is rather dull and stupid. I like this shot, because even though there's movement in the pic, it doesn't take anything away from the calm that your shots overall composition creates. Nice. :)

I've wanted a photo to go with the story of the guy walking on the beach tossing starfish back into the water... the tagline is "it makes a difference to this one". This composition seems perfect; there is enough space for the copy, and the water lets us know this starfish is still alive, not dried out and dead -- there is life in thei photo.
