brokenarts (a.k.a Davide Guglielmo) is a graphic designer out of Albignasego, PD, Italy. He is a long-time sxc member whose photos are some of the most downloaded on the site. He also wrote the very first tutorial and has contributed many since. We chatted with Davide over e-mail about his love of photography.

When did you start shooting? Why did you get involved with photography?

I studied photography in high school, but it has become a passion for me only recently, with the advent of digital cameras. Digital cameras are more practical than analogic cameras. It's great to shoot and see the results immediately; that's why photography has become one of my favourites hobbies.

Many of your photographs on sxc.hu consist of single objects against white backgrounds. How do you decide which objects you are going to shoot?

I choose some objects because they are useful subjects; other objects because they are beautiful; other object because they are difficult to photograph (I don't like the easy way :))

Lately I have photographed mainly subjects that could be useful to the SXC community.

What objects are the most challenging to photograph?

The difficult isn't in the object. The challenge is trying to obtain, with your camera, exactly the result you have in mind.

I see you are a graphic designer. In what ways do you find graphic design similar to photography?

The objective is the same: to make something beautiful.

What type of camera do you use?

Nearly all my photographs are made with a cheap camera, not a professional camera, but it has manual controls typical of the traditional analogic cameras. Manual controls are the main way to get the best results.

What's next on the creative horizon for Davide?

Considering that I'm moving into a new flat... I think that can be "interior decoration". :)

sxc news and competitions

Here are some updates on our current competitions:

NECKTIE BUSINESS

As stock photography is mostly about business, our first official photo competition was about neckties: we were looking for photos featuring neckties in all kinds of situations. We have received over 130 great submissions, and it was extremely difficult to choose the best so we decided to award two photographers!

[Drum roll...]

The 2GB memory card goes to Mr. Constantin Kammerer a.k.a costak from Germany for the so useful and so popular Office Shots series!

We would also like to surprise Mr. Mario A. Magallanes Trejo a.k.a mmagallan from Mexico with a 1GB memory card for his Way to the office series which really made us laugh.

Thank you very much for participating and congratulations to the winners!

CHIAROSCURO

Another community - organized competition took place in August for those who prefer taking more artistic shots. The theme was CHIAROSCURO which is defined as "the arrangement of light and dark elements in art", and the judges were looking for photos with contrast in both concept and technique. The winner is just about to be announced. To see all the submissions and learn more about this competition, please click here.
