Sundesigns (a.k.a Sundeip Arora)

In your profile, you say you are a graphic designer. How long have you been a graphic designer? And why did you become one?

I'm 34 and I've been a graphic designer for about 12 years now. I bought a computer long back and I tried everything on it right from gaming to programming, in due course of time I found that I was really enjoying doing graphics, it was then that I decided to take it more seriously and make it my career.

What motivated you to start photography?

Photography is a hobby, and there always is a great need of usable photographs for designs. When I'm shooting I'm pursuing my hobby and at the same time I'm getting input for my work. That's like mixing business with pleasure. In fact photography has made my work more enjoyable.

Has photography helped you grow as a graphic designer? If so, how?

Yes. Tremendously! Being able to shoot decent images can at times be very handy for a graphic designer. Especially in case of low budget projects where client is not willing to pay for expensive photography and in cases where time is at premium and you have no time to plan a shoot with a studio. So this knowledge of photography makes you a useful package. Having said that I still prefer to hire a high-end photographer if budget and time permits me.

What from your knowledge of graphic design are you able to apply to your photography?

Well, when I'm shooting for my work, I know exactly what is needed. It could be angles, areas to highlight, areas out of focus … it could be a million things and you can get that fast. That aspect of picture fitting in a particular place or its 'usabilty' is always there even when you are just wandering around taking pictures.

You seem to like shooting images isolated on white backgrounds. What do you like about shooting images in this style?

I'm first a graphic designer, and I think that way. Isolated images on white backgrounds give immense freedom to a designer to use variety of colours, shapes, patterns, etc. They are more useful when you shoot first and plan to use them later. This is precisely the reason why isolated objects on white background are among the most popular stock images. The person who might use them will have much more freedom in comparison to the images with backgrounds. And one more thing ... your client calls you up in the morning, he needs to make an important announcement in the news paper next morning, and he wants it ready by afternoon. What do you do? You can either say sorry or simply pick up an appropriate isolated image, put up the hurriedly prepared copy in the already provided space and voilà! The ad is ready.

What direction do you see your photography going in the future?

Well … this is the tough one. Photography has gone through such transformation in the last 10-15 years that one does not expects major changes in the near future though the tools of the trade will continue to become smarter and affordable. Smart combinations of software and hardware will continue to lessen the dependence on the skills. There will always be nostalgic feelings of good old time, but then past was not always that good. Marcel Pagnol (French Writer, Producer and Film Director, 1895-1974) once said "The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be".
